The Malay dilemma
Dr. Mahathir was born on December 20, 1925, in Alor Setar, Kedah. While still in school, he was involved in the campaign against thernMalayan Union in 1945-1946. Using the pseudonymrnC.H.E. Det, he frequently wrote articles about the Malay people and politics for the Sunday Times newspaper between 1946 andrn1950. He had long been a member of UMNO, but he only became famous in 1964 when he won a seat in the parliamentary elections. He was later expelled from UMNO in 1969 following a disagreement with the party leadership.rnIn 1972rn Dr. Mahathir was readmitted as a member of UMNO.rnBefore being appointed to the Cabinet in 1974, he hadrnproven his abilities as an administrator while serving asrnChairman of the Food Industries Association of Malaysia (FIMA). In March 1976, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister by Datuk Hussein Onn. When Datuk Hussein Onn resigned in 1981, Dr. Mahathir became the fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia.
